The Difference Between Soft Pack Lithium Batteries and Aluminium Cased Batteries
The main difference between soft pack lithium batteries and aluminium shell batteries is the difference in performance, application areas and manufacturing costs.
In terms of performance, there are no technical barriers in the industry, but there are still many technical problems to be solved for soft pack lithium batteries, especially in terms of battery cycle expansion index. Relatively speaking, the process performance of soft pack lithium batteries is not very stable and needs continuous improvement. However, the manufacturing process of aluminium-cased batteries is already more mature and the performance is more stable. The degree of automation is much higher than that of soft pack lithium batteries, which reduces the impact of human reasons on the consistency of the product at a certain level, and also saves a lot of money in terms of labour costs.
In terms of application areas, the use of flexible packaging lithium batteries has advantages in regions with high consumption levels, such as Europe and the United States. In most developing countries, such as India and the Middle East, aluminium-cased batteries have an obvious advantage. The overlap in application areas between them is reflected in the high-end smartphone market, where the application volume is the largest.
In terms of manufacturing costs, all the raw materials needed in the production line of aluminium-cased batteries. They can be supplied directly by the relevant companies in China. The entire production chain is already fully formed in China. In contrast, aluminium plastic film materials for soft pack lithium batteries still need to be sourced worldwide, and the technical requirements for battery materials are lower for aluminium case batteries than for soft pack lithium batteries. Under the same capacity, the overall material cost of aluminum shell battery is about 10% lower than that of soft pack lithium battery. And the process is also relatively mature, simple and low cost.
