Why Lithium Batteries Are Lighter and Smaller Compared to Lead-acid Batteries

2022-03-10

The mainstream cylindrical batteries, lithium batteries, flexible packaging batteries and square batteries on the market are generally lighter and not as large compared to lead-acid batteries. This is mainly due to the energy density and safety reasons.

Lithium batteries have high energy density, so they are not designed to have too large a capacity for safety reasons. The energy density of lead-acid batteries is relatively small, compared to ternary lithium batteries can reach 300Wh/kg, the energy density of lead-acid batteries is generally about 40Wh/kg. And the density of lithium batteries is still improving year by year, and it is because of the energy density continues to improve, we are also increasing the requirements for safety.

According to the past news, because of excessive energy, lithium batteries have suffered accidents, internal component instability caused thermal runaway and violent reactions inside the battery. Excessive energy is nowhere to release no matter what the battery is very dangerous, especially because the battery will generally be sealed and packaged in a small space. In the case of battery problems, conventional fire extinguishing agents are difficult to extinguish battery combustion, and difficult to reach the inside of the battery, because we often have to isolate the scene at the time of the accident, so that the problem occurs inside the battery reaction occurs until the battery no longer burns

So it is easy to reach a consensus: the overall capacity of the battery should be limited to a reasonable range
