How to Quickly Identify the Quality of 18650 Batteries?

2022-03-10

If professional testing is available, the most reliable and convenient method is to use a professional instrument, otherwise we can only make a basic conclusion.

1. The fastest test method is to test the internal resistance and the maximum discharge current. A good quality Li-ion battery has a small internal resistance and a large maximum discharge current. A multimeter with a range of 20A is used to directly short circuit the two electrodes of the lithium battery. The current should generally be around 10A or even higher and can be maintained for some time. A relatively stable battery is a good one.

2. Observe the appearance of the battery, e.g. if it is well made or if the packaging looks very good, or check the casing for stains or tears.

3. Weighing. The weight of a single 18650 battery is usually around 45g or 50g. If the weight is too low or too high, be wary of battery capacity problems or quality issues.

4. Hardness. Check if the battery shows steel hardness. (if this most basic check does not pass, we should consider whether we have ordered the wrong product)

5. Test the safety of the battery with a short circuit testing. This test is recommended to be carried out by specialist equipment and people.
