Are Li-ion Battery Protection Board(pcb/pcm) Important?

2022-03-10

Due to chemical characteristics, no lithium-ion battery can be guaranteed to be 100% safe. In order to minimize the risk of safety accidents, we generally work in two directions: 1. the battery itself. 2. the charger

The battery itself will also have some protective measures, most notably through the protection plate to protect the battery. The PCB of Li-ion battery is a protection circuit installed in the negative terminal of the battery, its main function is to prevent overcharging damage to the battery, over-discharging damage to the battery and over-current damage to the battery. If the battery does not have a battery PCB due to cost or space size considerations, the battery can be protected by the charger. Under the premise that the quality of the battery passes, there will generally be no safety problems. However, considering the complexity of the use environment, over-discharge has become the most direct situation that we need to face to damage the battery.

Due to the characteristics of lithium-ion batteries, if the battery exceeds the final voltage of the battery discharge during the discharge process, the internal pressure of the battery may increase when the battery continues to discharge. The reversibility of the positive and negative active substances is destroyed, which significantly reduces the capacity or even completely destroys the battery. Li-ion battery PCB can cut the circuit before over-discharge occurs and stop over-discharge to protect the battery. As a component that protects the battery and the user and extends the life of the product, the PCB is a very important part of modern battery systems.
